First, add the Gutsy repository to the source. The new kernel is in the Gutsy repository.
echo ‘deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main restricted’ | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
Update the repository
sudo apt-get update
Install the new kernel:
sudo apt-get install linux linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic
Answer yes to all to all the prompt.
Remove the Gutsy repository:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Remove this line inside sources.list
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main restricted
Update the repository list to stop getting Gutsy’s updates:
sudo apt-get update
Reboot.
Modem does not work after kernel upgrade. Even after remove the hsfmodem and reinstall.
Uninstalling the new kernel:

sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-2.6.22-13
sudo apt-get remove linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic
sudo apt-get remove linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-13-generic
